Wastewater Applications

UVT Monitoring can be used in Wastewater Treatment Plants (WwTP) at various stages to identify peaks and dips in the organic content. Most commonly used at inlet, Final Effluent (FE) and Storm Overflow (SO) monitoring.

Having a real-time monitor of water quality incoming to the WwTP is a handy tool for operators to get a scope of the process needs of the load. The importance of monitoring final effluent in the real time is to avoid discharges to water courses especially in bathing water areas.

UK and EU directives state that Final Effluent and CSOs discharging to the bathing waters must monitor various parameters to adhere to water quality standards this included organic content, UV254 can assist in meeting the requirements and ensure discharge compliance. In the EU, the Bathing Water Directive (Directive 2006/7/EC) sets out the quality standards and monitoring requirements for bathing waters across member states. The directive establishes parameters for microbiological, physical, and chemical water quality, which should be regularly assessed to ensure compliance. WwTPs that discharge into bathing waters must meet these standards to prevent any adverse effects on the quality of the water. In the UK, the Bathing Water Regulations 2013 transpose the requirements of the EU Bathing Water Directive into national legislation. The regulations specify the water quality standards that must be met for designated bathing waters in England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. The Environment Agencies in each country within the UK are responsible for monitoring and enforcing compliance with these regulations.

A storm overflow, also known as a Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO), is a safety mechanism used in sewer systems to prevent sewer overflows and minimize the risk of flooding during heavy rain events. Storm Overflow (SO) were designed to provide relief to the water network and reduce floods occurring. In recent years due to industrial growth and population increase CSOs are being used to discharge materials when there is heavy rainfall. Many have highlighted the need to monitor not only flow but water quality in the event of a storm causing overflows to CSO and wastewater networks.

Using UV254 as a surrogate measurement of Total Organic Carbon (TOC), Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) is an effective method to get real-time results for the incoming load, each tanks concentration at a given stage or for assisting final effluent discharge compliance. Monitoring UV254 to BOD surrogate results can also highlight the quality of incoming water can allow operators to adjust aeration blowers up or down according to the reading. It is especially helpful for operators to know the biological content in processes such as aerobic activated sludge treatment.

In summary the need for real-time analysis, cost-effective solutions and process optimization and compliance is what is driving the market for UV254 in Wastewater. We have a range of products to suit most wastewater monitoring needs and projects. Get in contact to find out more.
